JDA and CTM Architects were invited to enter a competition for a new scheme to redevelop the historic buildings of St Mary in the Castle, on the Hastings Old Town sea front. JDA and CTM won two competitions and were commissioned to build Hastings Youth Hub, run by Myplace, a government programme to provide facilities of all kinds for young people. An existing arts and entertainments venue was to be redesigned and evolved into a regenerated venue. In consultation with the client and youth groups, JDA created a proposal for a design that would integrate sympathetically with the existing building structure. The project intended to provide flexible, functional and high–quality new spaces, including an auditorium for concerts, shows and events, a crypt for exhibitions, and cafés and public spaces overlooking the sea front.
Extensive consultations with youth groups, local conservation architects and English Heritage formed part of the work for the team of professionals working on this project. Unfortunately, National Lottery funding was not forthcoming and the scheme did not proceed.
